The South East School of Public Health Statement on Specialist Registration by Portfolio Assessment route
The retrospective route to registration was formally opened on the 1st Sept 2018 by UKPHR. The purpose of this new route was to bring it in line with the Certificate of Eligibility of Specialist Registration (CESR) route (www.gmc-uk.org) ensuring there is equivalence to those working at a senior/public health specialist level who come from a specialist background other than medicine, to gain a specialist registration.

In 2025, the School of Public Health worked collaboratively with public health employers across the region to deliver a one-off development programme to support a cohort of senior public health individuals, working at Public Health Consultant level, to complete a pre-application to UKPHR by the end of March 2026. This developmental programme has concluded.

The School recognises the value in having equivalent registration routes for both medics and those from other specialist areas in Public Health.

September 2026 statement of School’s position to access exam support to professionals outside of the training programme
The South East School of Public Health recognises the value in having equivalent registration routes for both medics and those from other specialist areas in Public Health via the GMC and UKPHR. The School welcomes the support provided by many employers across the region to support their employees to succeed via retrospective routes to registration.
The South East School of Public Health in collaboration with ADPH South East has agreed the primary route to specialist registration is via the Specialty Training Programme. The School has finite resources to support specialist registrars which are currently at limited capacity due to ongoing organisational transformational programmes. The School is unable to extend access to educational opportunities outside of the training programme, including exam support and training.
